Seeing Isn’t Believing: The Science of Misidentification

Eyewitness testimony is often among the most compelling evidence presented in a courtroom—but decades of research have shown that human memory is far less reliable than many believe. This presentation explores the science behind eyewitness identification, including how memories are formed, stored, and altered; the effects of stress, weapon focus, cross-racial identification, and suggestive procedures; and why witness confidence does not necessarily equal accuracy. Presented by Christina Waugh, Training Director, Board of Indigents’ Defense Services.
